Now Open for the 2025 Season, the Island Invites Guests to Experience its Natural Beauty and Unique Spirit Ahead of a Full Reimagination with Banyan Tree’s Signature Experiences in 2026
Banyan Group, an independent, global hospitality company, furthers its strategic expansion in Europe with the addition of Mamula Island by Banyan Tree, a private island retreat nestled in Montenegro’s Boka Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Adriatic Sea. Formerly known as Mamula Island, the hotel now joins the Banyan Tree portfolio, welcoming guests throughout the 2025 season ahead of a full reimagination with the brand’s signature experiences in 2026.
We are excited to welcome Mamula Island into our Banyan Group family. This marks an important step in our journey of thoughtful global expansion - creating meaningful destinations that honour their natural and cultural context while delivering distinct guest experiences. As we grow our footprint in Europe, we remain focused on building long-term value for our guests, partners, and communities.Eddy See, President and Chief Executive Officer of Banyan Group
Mamula Island is a project of deep personal significance for Samih Sawiris, reflecting his family’s long-standing commitment to Montenegro. As a cornerstone investment alongside Luštica Bay, the island represents Orascom Development’s broader vision for sustainable growth and world-class hospitality in the region.
The first time I saw Mamula was during my initial visit to Montenegro while scouting land for what is now Luštica Bay. For over 10 years, I envisioned Mamula transforming into what it has finally become—a true jewel at the entrance of the bay, illuminating the region’s potential and development. The hotel remains open throughout the 2025 season and will be fully reimagined in 2026 to reflect the signature Banyan Tree experience, featuring refined design enhancements, signature service rituals, and integrated spa & wellbeing programming.Samih Sawiris

Located on a secluded islet at the entrance of Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor is set within a meticulously restored 19th-century fort and surrounded by sea, sky, and wild coastal landscapes. Fully restored just two years ago, its transformation was led by local and international architectural teams in close collaboration with conservation specialists to celebrate the site’s original beauty.
The journey to the island begins with a private boat transfer across the serene waters of Boka Bay or a helicopter flight from Dubrovnik or Tivat, offering a breathtaking aerial approach over Montenegro’s rugged coastline and sparkling Adriatic Sea.
- Far-reaching sea views of the Adriatic, enjoyed from private coves, sun-soaked terraces, and a serviced private beach. Guests can spend their days by the sea at one of the three pools, retreating to quiet inlets or lounging along the panoramic Sun Deck, where the horizon stretches endlessly before them.
- A connection to craftsmanship, reflected in the island’s 32 guest rooms and suites, which include heritage suites featuring original stonework and newly built accommodations with floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces. Each space is thoughtfully designed with bespoke furniture, curated local artwork, all-natural amenities, and sweeping sea views. Among them, the Heritage Sky Suites adorned with century-old frescoes were recently named Best Hotel Suite at the prestigious AHEAD Awards Europe and ranked among the top ten suites in the world.
- A celebration of seasonal, locally inspired flavours. From leisurely poolside dining at the Mediterranean all-day restaurant, to a refined Italian culinary journey in the west wing, to intimate evenings at Pinea—a speakeasy-style cocktail bar offering house-made infusions, each setting invites guests to savour the richness of the land and sea.
- A restorative spa journey, set within the fortress’s original central tower, invites guests into a deeply immersive experience. Ritual rooms, Finnish and herbal saunas, a halotherapy chamber, an aqua floating tank, and a gym come together to blend time-honoured techniques with modern wellness therapies.
- Creative and cultural programming, where exhibitions and seasonal art programming, including opera performances in partnership with the local Operosa music festival, offering guests a deeper connection with the region’s creative expression.
- Exclusive hire options, available for weddings, private events and retreats, with the island offering a one-of-a-kind setting for unforgettable gatherings.
